ILGA Asia is looking for a Global Advocacy Officer to join our team. This is an exciting full-time position to work with more than 170 LGBTIQ member organisations across Asia to advance the human rights of LGBTIQ people.

Languages Required: English
Expected duration: 3 months on probation followed by a 9-month contract
Remuneration:   67,000 Thai baht per month with health insurance and other benefits

ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association, representing East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. 

Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected.

  • To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatization based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA;

  • Empower and support LGBTIQ communities, organizations and individuals in Asia, while encouraging community building and networking.

Role purpose

The Global Advocacy Officer will lead ILGA Asia’s advocacy and policy efforts at the regional and international levels.

As the Global Advocacy Officer you support the work of national Asian LGBTIQ organisations. You provide training and assist them in increasing their impact. You represent ILGA Asia in a multinational, multiannual program where you collaborate with other consortium partners to achieve the advocacy objectives of the program. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual and multi-annual advocacy strategy development for ILGA Asia.

  • Implement ILGA Asia’s international and regional advocacy efforts:

    • Represent ILGA Asia at the international stage (UN)

    • Support Asian organisations and  activists on the UN mechanisms engagement

    • Leading the submission of joint statements, shadow reports, policy briefs and position papers 

    • Monitoring, documenting, analysing of advocacy engagement including policy and political development at UN and member countries across Asia 

  • Strengthen the capacity of member organisations and activists in the Asian region to conduct advocacy and engage with human rights mechanisms through organising training and conducting fellowship programs.

  • Coordinate the advocacy initiatives and coalitions with alliance partners and member organisations.    

  • Build and maintain networks with policy makers, diplomats and member organisations. 

Requirements

  • A Master’s in Human Rights, International Human Rights Law or a comparable field from an accredited university or matching work or volunteer experience. 

  • 5 years of working experience in national, regional and international level advocacy. 

  • Engagement with grassroots activists and organisations.

  • Excellent command of English both written and spoken. 

  • Solid understanding of SOGIESC issues, especially in relation to Human Rights.

Desirable qualities

  • Has direct experience with LGBTIQ activism.

  • Has direct experience in human rights, advocacy and policy work.

  • Has proficient knowledge of the UN Human Rights System, in particular the Human Rights Council, UPR, Special Procedures and the UN SDGs.

  • Has relevant experience in working in international teams.

  • Able to work independently, overview a broad and extensive range of tasks and prioritize as necessary. 

  • Be result driven and have strong planning skills.

  • Have an open attitude and be able to work with discriminated, isolated and traumatized groups.

  • Have willingness and flexibility to travel internationally on a regular basis.

LGBTIQ D/deaf and disabled people; lesbian and bisexual women; intersex persons; trans, gender-diverse, and non-binary persons; PLHIVs (persons living with HIV) and persons from the Global South are especially encouraged to apply, to increase the representation of people among LGBTIQ communities in our work.
